Through the ages, playing pool was a sport for kings and noblemen. No one is exactly sure who invented the game,
but today it is still very popular, not just for kings and noblemen but for everyone. Some will tout that the
American popularity of pool is attributive to Michael Phelan, the father of billiards or pool. In eighteen fifty he
wrote the first American book on the game of pool. He helped devise the rules and standards of behavior. He is the
one that added the diamonds to the table to help get a better aim among other designs.
Through the ages the pool table has come a long way. There are still the big, ornate pool tables around but now
days many are going for the more sleek lines and designs. Contemporary pool tables are becoming quite the rage.
Many people like the all stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, the bathroom, living and dining room and even
their pool rooms. They are investing a lot of money in the items and it includes the pool table.
There are many designs one may choose from, such as one that the legs have brushed aluminum with a high gloss
trim. Mother of pearl square rail sights and black leather pockets give quite the look. Most of them have a three
piece, one inch thick slate and drop pockets that are of metal backed leather. Starting price on this style can
start at sixteen thousand and go up. The legs look like oversized thick tripods.
Many like the arc style of contemporary pool tables. The base of the pool table looks like an arc; many are made
of solid wood or maybe brushed stainless steel. They seem to have a metal Formica finish. One that is high in
luster. Metal backed drop pockets and a three piece one inch thick slate are also a part of this beautiful pool
table. Prices range from ten thousand to twelve thousand dollars.
Another style of the arced base would be all stainless steel for contemporary pool tables. These might have
different colored lights that shine up from the base. These could be any color one chooses. One that is gaining
popularity is the base of trophies. At each end there is a large looking trophy style with a U shape on the
outside. Very unique in it’s design.
The standard woods on this style of contemporary pool tables can be Adler, maple or oak. Some might be brushed
with an antique nickel finish, and these come in sizes of eight or nine foot tables. It can also come with a dining
top that fits loosely on top of the pool table, thus giving one extra room for dinner guests.
There are some people that still like the wood look in contemporary pool tables and might choose a style of the
layered look for the base, or legs. Most are built either out of cherry or maple wood. K-66 super speed gum rubber
cushions and the three piece one inch slate are standard. They have the drop pockets of metal backed leather as
well. These are very sturdy and the up keep in minimal.
